What to Expect at Your First Appointment with a Family Medicine Doctor

November 1, 2024

Are you nervous about your first visit to a family medicine doctor? Many people feel scared when they see a new doctor for the first time, especially if they have not been to a doctor in years or are seeing someone new. But do not worry!

In this blog, we will tell you everything that will happen during your first visit and help you feel less worried.

Preparing for Your Visit

Before you go to your appointment, there are a few things you should do to get ready:

  • Make a List of Questions or Concerns: Think about any health issues or questions you have. Writing them down will help you remember to ask the doctor.
  • Bring Your Medical History: If you have any previous medical records, bring them along. Share information like past illnesses, surgeries, allergies, and any medications you are taking.
  • Know Your Family Health History: Be ready to share information about health conditions that run in your family, such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
  • Insurance Card and ID: Do not forget to bring your health insurance card and a form of identification.

During the Appointment

When you arrive at the doctor’s office, you will likely check in at the front desk. Here is what usually happens next:

Filling Out Forms

You might need to fill out some paperwork, including forms about your medical history, your family’s medical history, and your current health concerns. This helps the family medicine doctor understand your health background better.

Meeting the Nurse

A staff member will often call you back to a room where they will check your vital signs. This includes:

  • Blood Pressure: A cuff is placed around your arm to measure the pressure of your blood against your artery walls.
  • Heart Rate: They will check how many times your heart beats per minute.
  • Temperature: Your body temperature will be checked, usually with a thermometer in your mouth or ear.
  • Weight and Height: You will be asked to step on a scale to measure your weight and stand to measure your height.

Meeting the Family Medicine Doctor

After the staff has finished, you will meet the family medicine doctor. Here is what you can expect during this part of the visit:

  • Discussion: The doctor will ask you about your medical history, family history, and any symptoms or concerns you may have. Be honest and detailed; this helps the doctor make the best decisions for your care.
  • Physical Exam: The doctor will conduct a basic physical examination. This might include listening to your heart and lungs, checking your ears, throat, and eyes, feeling your abdomen, and testing your reflexes.
  • Questions: Feel free to ask any questions you have prepared. No question is too small or silly; the doctor is there to help you understand your health.

Tests and Screenings

Depending on your age, health history, and current symptoms, the doctor might recommend certain tests or screenings. These could include:

  • Blood Tests: A small sample of your blood may be taken to check for issues like high cholesterol, diabetes, or other conditions.
  • Urine Test: You might be asked to provide a urine sample to test for infections or other problems.
  • Vaccinations: If you’re due for any vaccines, the doctor might suggest getting them during your visit.

After the Appointment

Once the appointment is done, here is what you should do next:

  • Follow-Up Instructions: The doctor may give you instructions to follow at home, like taking medications, making lifestyle changes, or scheduling further tests. Make sure you understand these instructions before you leave.
  • Schedule Your Next Visit: Regular check-ups are important. The doctor might suggest when you should come back for your next appointment.
  • Review Your Notes: Go over any notes or information given to you during the appointment. This helps you remember what was discussed and what steps to take next.
